Raspberry Pi 4 · Garage
The garage TV, run from a phone.
A Raspberry Pi 4 behind the garage TV. It asks who is watching, shows that person's workout for the day, runs a full-screen interval timer, and turns any phone in the house into the remote.
What it does
Who's watching?
A profile chooser on the TV. Each person gets their own workout for the day.
Interval timer
Full-screen work and rest rounds, big enough to read from across the garage.
Phone remote
D-pad, touchpad and typing from the phone, plus TV power and volume over HDMI-CEC.
Streaming apps
YouTube, Netflix and the rest open on the TV from the phone.
Spotify Connect
The Pi shows up as a speaker in Spotify.
Admin PIN
Only the admin profile can add people, and it asks for the PIN.
Setting it up
Plug it in
With no network, the TV shows a setup screen and starts its own Wi-Fi hotspot.
Scan the QR code
Pick the home Wi-Fi from your phone.
Name the TV
Then make the admin profile and its PIN.
Add everyone else
The + tile on the TV asks for the admin PIN.
It lives in the house
The app runs on the Pi itself, and the phone site is only on the home network, at garage-tv.local. There is no account to make and no cloud service behind it.
Updates are installed by hand from the admin screen, so the TV never changes in the middle of a workout.
Built for one garage
It was made for one Pi on one TV, down to workarounds for that hardware: a long HDMI run that only behaves at 720p, and a Chromium that has to skip the GPU to draw cleanly. It is not for sale.
